In order to give the offense more options, the offense is allowed to "down"(dropping to a knee and touching the Tugball to the ground) the Tugball a maximum of three times during a single possession. Once the offense "downs" the Tugball, both teams must return to their side of the Tugball. Play resumes once an offensive player picks up the Tugball. This strategy can be particulary useful if a player is in possession of the Tugball and has run out of room and does not want to get into a duel.
